Narrowed Topic Instructions for Research Paper:

    Dear Students,

I am posting the instructions for your first assignment; the narrowed topic.  This narrowed topic will have to funnel into your thesis statement, so remember to read the instructions completely before creating the narrowed topic.

Email me at delafuente@dadeschools.net if you have any questions.

Research Paper Assignment· Thesis Statement Writing

Writing the thesis to your paragraph is probably the most definitive moment of this process, because you are essentially declaring your commitment to a plan for your paper.

On the following page, you will find a foolproof method for helping you develop your thesis statement.

You can also turn to the Writing Packet you printed for class for further help.

Before you write your thesis, you should think of what you MUST include in your paper after your thesis, so that your thesis statement includes mention of this information.

Remember that your thesis statement should be a PLAN for your paper, not a summary of every bit of information you will eventually provide.

Your thesis statement must be SPECIFIC enough to be identifiable, but it MUST be GENERAL enough to leave something for the following paragraphs to develop.

You will ONLY write one paragraph for the purpose of this assignment, but you need to know this information for future reference and use.

Think of this process as a funnel. You begin with a very broad and vague subject, which you must then reduce to a specific thesis statement. Follow the steps below to FUNNEL out your thesis statement.

SAMPLE FUNNEL PROCESS FOR THESIS STATEMENT WRITING

BIG   BROAD  SUBJECT :   Kate Chopin’s short fiction.

NARROWED  TO TOPIC :Kate Chopin’s views of marriage in “Story of an Hour”.

REDUCED BY ASSOCIATION TO AUTHOR: The story “Story of an Hour” shows that Kate Chopin saw marriage as the death of independence for women.

REDUCED BY ASSOCIATION TO TIME PERIOD: The story was written during the turn of the 19th century when the feminist movement was gaining strength, so it reflects a new emphasis on the woman as capable of being independent.

REDUCED BY ASSOCIATION TO STYLE/MOVEMENT:   Chopin is categorized as a regionalist, which was a type of realism, dedicated to revealing life accurately and in detail.

ALL THE REDUCTIONS TOGETHER TO GET YOUR FINALIZED, VERY SPECIFIC THESIS STATEMENT BASED ON YOUR OBSERVATIONS AND PRELIMINARY RESEARCH.

    THESIS STATEMENT

Kate Chopin’s short story “The Story of an Hour” illustrates the author’s feminist view that marriage confined women to lives of dependence through its realistic portrayal of the main character’s complex reaction to news of her husband’s death.

USE YOUR PRELIMINARY RESEARCH AND IDEAS TO DEVELOP YOUR THESIS STATEMENT

    Periods 4, 5 and 6:

You have done an awesome job with the Literary Analysis questions of “Pancakes”.  So many of you are thinking “out of the box” and putting these answers in your own words. This week we will be working on citations.  Groups will work together on one specific question to learn how to cite and support answers.

I will try and get the projector from one of the teachers, so that these classes can see the movie of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde next week (10/17/11).  Using the movie,I will come up with an assignment that will serve as your final test on this book.

ALL OF MY CLASSES HAVE DONE AN AMAZING JOB ON THE THANK YOU CARDS TO THE SOLDIERS.  BRING IN SUPPLIES THIS WEEK SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO DO THIS ACTIVITY AT THE END OF CLASS AND ASSURE THAT A GOOD NUMBER OF SOLDIERS ARE RECEIVING A THANK YOU CARD.
